Overview

Arkwright is a town in the northeast corner of Chautauqua County, bordered to the north by Sheridan and a small bit of Hanover, to the east by Villenova, to the south by Charlotte, and to the west by Pomfret. The village of Fredonia is just beyond Arkwright’s northwest corner. Arkwright is a rural, sparsely populated town of just over 1,000 residents.


Essentials

As such a small town, Arkwright has little development and few places to shop. There are several nearby options. For grocery shopping, Pomfret and Fredonia have stores like Country Fair and the Fredonia Deli and Food Mart and a Walmart Supercenter. Dunkirk has a Tops Friendly Markets store on Vineyard Drive and smaller stores like Aldi’s (also on Vineyard Drive), P & G Foods (on Central Avenue), and Save-A-Lot (on East 4th Street). For retail shopping, there’s the Walmart Supercenter and a Sears Hometown Store in Fredonia. Dunkirk has a JC Penney store in D & F Plaza on Central Avenue, where you’ll also find stores like Big Lots and Maurice’s, a women’s clothing shop. Dunkirk’s Vineyard Plaza has a Peebles store and a T.J. Maxx store. 



Recreation & Entertainment

This is wide-open, small-town living where the attractions are outdoors. Hiking is popular along places like Canadaway Creek and Arkwright Falls. Fishing is big in West Mud Lake. Hunting, camping and snowmobiling also are popular activities in Arkwright. For a wider variety of things to do, head to Fredonia for places like the Rockefeller Arts Center and the Fredonia Opera House, or to Dunkirk, which has public swimming beaches, popular waterfront areas and attractions like the Alco-Brooks Railroad Display.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 83 is a major east-west highway through the town of Arkwright.



Pros & Cons

Arkwright is one of the smallest towns in Chautauqua County. If you like wide-open spaces and lightly developed areas, you’ll like Arkwright.
