OverviewThe Town of Butler is in central-eastern Wayne County, bordering Cayuga County to the east, and south of the town of Wolcott. Butler has about 2,200 residents, making it among the least-populated towns in the county, and includes four hamlets. The town has ridges and valleys running north and south and agriculture is the main industry. The hamlet of South Butler once was a bustling community with a saw mill, a tannery and the Hibbard Basket Works Company, as well as two general stores and other businesses. Today, South Butler is a quiet, residential community. South Butler also is where the first female minister in the United States was ordained. Route 89 is an important north-south roadway in town, intersecting with Route 104 – the major east-west thoroughfare in the area – in the northwest portion of town. Students who live here attend the North Rose-Wolcott Central School District. The Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge is to the south. Seneca Falls, an interesting and historic town in Seneca County, is about 24 miles south.
