OverviewThe village of Newark is in the southern part of the town of Arcadia, and in the south-central part of Wayne County, bordering Ontario County. Newark is considered the center of industry for Wayne County, with companies such as UltraLife Batteries and Hallagan Manufacturing. Of the town’s roughly 15,000 residents, about two-thirds live in Newark. The Erie Canal runs through Newark, and boating and other outdoor activities associated with the canal are popular. Newark, like Lyons and Macedon, has its own police department. The Jackson & Perkins Co, a well-known horticultural firm famous for its roses, started here in the 1800s. The Newark Central School District serves students in the area. Sarah Coventry Inc., which marketed costume jewelry and was known world-wide, started here. Newark is the home of professional bowler Doug Kent, the 2006-07 PBA Player of the Year, who runs a bowling center in town. The town also has a professional baseball team that starts play in June. Newark is the largest and most populated village in Wayne County. The hamlet of Hydesville, northwest of Newark, became known as the birthplace of modern Spiritualism because of the Fox Sisters who lived there.
