Overview

The village of Newark is in the southern part of the town of Arcadia, and in the south-central part of Wayne County, bordering Ontario County. Newark is considered the center of industry for Wayne County, with companies such as UltraLife Batteries and Hallagan Manufacturing. Of the town’s roughly 15,000 residents, about two-thirds live in Newark. The Erie Canal runs through Newark, and boating and other outdoor activities associated with the canal are popular. Newark, like Lyons and Macedon, has its own police department. The Jackson & Perkins Co, a well-known horticultural firm famous for its roses, started here in the 1800s. The Newark Central School District serves students in the area.


Essentials

Newark has the only Wegmans supermarket in Wayne County. Other grocery stores include the Maple Ridge Grocery and Save-a-Lot. The Newark Public Library is at 121 High St. Newark also is home to the only hospital in Wayne County, Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. The Newark Post Office is at 300 W. Main St. The Newark Central School District has five schools, including one high school and one middle school.



Recreation & Entertainment

Newark has more entertainment options than many neighboring communities. Showplace 6 is a multiplex movie theater at Main and Union streets. The Newark Country Club has a nine-hole golf course and restaurant. Doug Kent’s Rose Bowl Lanes, at 725 West Miller St., is owned and operated by the bowling pro. There’s an Upstate BMX Track on Silver Hill Road and a Tiki Putt miniature golf course on Van Buren Street.



Transportation & Traffic

State Highway 31 runs east-west through Newark and alongside the Erie Canal. Route 88, which is Main Street in Newark, is the main north-south road. The Thruway is nearby, to the south of Newark. Traffic is typically not heavy in Newark.



Pros & Cons

Newark is the biggest village in Wayne County and has a lot of shopping and entertainment choices. The village sits on the banks of the Erie Canal, making it popular for boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts. You’re close to the Thruway and not far from Geneva and Canandaigua.
