Overview Chautauqua is a town in central Chautauqua County, located on the shores of Chautauqua Lake and the largest town by mass in the county. The town is the home to the world-renowned Chautauqua Institution and was recently labeled as the “Best Small Town to Visit” in the country. The town includes the village of Mayville, which is the county seat, and several more hamlets. Chautauqua is bordered to the north by Westfield and Portland; to the east by Stockton and Ellery; to the south by Sherman and North Harmony; and to the west by Ripley. Chautauqua’s pastoral setting and bucolic surroundings make the area ideal for outdoor lovers, and the lake are popular for boaters and fishermen – but the real attraction here is the Chautauqua Institution, which has oodles of historic sites and has been visited by luminaries like then-President Bill Clinton and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Local Museums & Landmarks Where to start? The Chautauqua Institution Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and then designated a National Historic Landmark. The Lewis Miller Cottage is one of many landmarks at the institution. In Mayville, Pennsylvania Railroad Station was added to the National Register in 1993 and the Point Chautauqua Historic District followed three years later. There are lots of museums in the area, too, including the Oliver Archives Center on the institution grounds and the Chautauqua Township Historical Society at the Depot Museum in Mayville, where the ice harvesting industry of years ago is featured.

Essentials Chautauqua and Mayville are loaded with upscale, specialty, antique and gift shops, including Webb’s Candy Factory, Reverie Creamery, the Art Loft, Chautauqua Ironworks and more. Lighthouse Point Grocery is a small food shop in Mayville. For more grocery shopping, Mayville has a Tops Friendly Markets Store on Erie Street. There’s a Wegmans supermarket in Jamestown, about 14 miles southeast of Chautauqua. For a wider variety of retail shopping, nearby Lakewood has a Walmart Supercenter and the Chautauqua Mall, with anchor stores like JC Penney and Sears, a movie theater and more. Students who live here attend the Chautauqua Lake Central School District, the Bemus Point Central School District or the Sherman Central School District. The closest hospitals are Westfield Memorial to the north and WCA Hospital in Jamestown to the southeast. The local library is Smith Memorial on Miller Avenue.

More than 8,000 people turn out for the annual summer session, which includes a variety of performances, music, classes, lectures, dance and more. People come to Chautauqua Institution to relax and for mental and spiritual stimulation; then-President Bill Clinton went there to prepare for a debate when he was seeking re-election in the 1990s. You can also take a steamboat ride across beautiful Chautauqua Lake, visit a spa, take in an opera performance, see outdoor movies, fish and hike, play miniature golf and much more here. The “Best Small Town” designation came in 2014 from the well-respected Smithsonian.com

Transportation & Traffic Route 394 and Route 430, which intersect in Mayville, are the two main highways around here. Along with cars, people can get around the lake on steamships and ferry boats. As might be expected, the busy summer season can lead to traffic congestion.

This has long been a destination spot for those looking to refresh mentally, physically and spiritually.
