Overview

Ripley is on the western edge of Chautauqua County, making it one of the westernmost towns in New York State (along with Mina and French Creek, both south of Ripley). Ripley is at the western end of the New York State Thruway – continuing west, you’re in Pennsylvania. Ripley is bordered to the north by Lake Erie, to the east by Westfield and Chautauqua, to the south by Mina and to the west by Pennsylvania (town of North East).



Essentials

Ripley’s small business district has a few stores, like a hardware store and small grocers like the State Line Grocery. More shopping options are a short drive away. For grocery shopping, Westfield has a Tops Friendly Markets store on East Main Street. The nearby village of Mayville (in the town of Chautauqua) has a Lighthouse Point Grocery and another Tops Friendly Markets.



Recreation & Entertainment

With this being primarily a rural community, most of the entertainment options are of the outdoor variety. For starters, the town’s location on the shoreline of Lake Erie attracts boaters, campers and fishermen and –women. The Seaway Trail, which hugs the shoreline along Route 5, you’ll find wineries, a golf course, restaurants and more.



Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway passes through the northern end of Ripley and is at it westernmost point there. Route 5 hugs the shoreline of Lake Erie and provides breathtaking views. Route 20 and Route 76 also pass through the town.



Pros & Cons

Ripley is on the shoreline of Lake Erie and in the so-called “Concord Grape Belt,” with grape farming a big industry here. This is a small, close-knit town that’s close to the busier Chautauqua and just east of the Pennsylvania border (and close to bustling Erie, Pa.).
