Welcome to Wheatland, NY

Overview

Encompassing thirty square miles, the Town of Wheatland borders Livingston county and has Oatka Creek running through it. Among its major villages are Scottsville on Rt. 383 and the hamlet of Mumford, home to the Genesee Country Museum, "where history comes alive." Only eleven miles from the City of Rochester, residents are able to enjoy all the culture of that locale, and yet live in a lovely rural, agricultural area surrounded by natural beauty.

Who Lives Here

The people of Wheatland are an independent breed, enjoying their close ties with nature and their community's place in the history of the region. Many buildings in the area date back to the 1800's; and locals are proud to keep them maintained properly for the next generation.

Essentials

Antique shops, a bed and breakfast, farm markets, grocery stores, hair salons and family owned restaurants can be found in Wheatland. The Senior Center at 22 Man Street in Scottsville provides lunch and special activities.

Recreation & Entertainment

Tubing on Oatka Creek is a local favorite; as are hiking and fishing. The Oatka, as a matter of fact, is one of the best trout fishing streams in the state. The NYS Greenway passes through Wheatland, and from it, you can follow trails for miles - all year long. A few locally owned restaurants are found in the area, mostly along Scottsville Road, to provide a night out or a quick afternoon bite.

Transportation & Traffic

Scottsville Mumford Road and North Road cut across the region with Union Street and Wheatland Center Road, as well as River Road, being the other main arteries. The area is sparsely populated, so roads are generally free from congestion.

Pros & Cons

Like most of the outlying townships in Monroe county, life in Wheatland is simple and quiet. The country feel that permeates the region provides a sense of peace to residents who choose to live here because it is far away from the hustle-bustle of the city and the immediate suburbs. However, residents must frequently travel to those areas for work, entertainment and shopping.
